Appointed on August 16, 2023, Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo currently holds the esteemed position of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, specializing in Gas, under the administration of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Between 2007 and 2011, Ekpo made significant contributions as the representative for the Abak/Ika/Etim Ekpo federal constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives. Before this pivotal role, he took the helm as the executive chairman of the Ika Local Government Area, located in the vibrant state of Akwa Ibom.

Honoring his dedication to peace and harmony, Ekpo’s native Ika community awarded him the revered title of Obongemem, symbolizing the “Ambassador of Peace.”

Showcasing his political acumen, in 2023, Ekpo secured the All Progressives Congress ticket for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. He transferred the ticket to Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, demonstrating humility and strategic foresight. This move paved the way for Akpabio’s victorious general election outcome and subsequent appointment as the current president of the Nigerian Senate.
